It’s great having the kids around over the weekend or during the holidays. But oh boy, doesn’t it blow your routine out of the water?!
More cooking, more playdays, more distractions. And less time for exercise!
But with a little ingenuity, you can still fit exercise into your day – and here are 9 ways for doing just that, while still enjoying family life to the full.
1. Make the kitchen your gym
Inevitably, you’ll spend more TIME in the kitchen during school holidays. So make the most of it and exercise while making toast, WAITING for the kettle to boil or the veggies to cook. Why not try some push-ups against the wall or kitchen table to lift your BUST and firm any bingo wings.
And for your WAISTLINE, side stretching is perfect when you’re waiting for something to finish COOKING – and much more fun than watching water boil!
2. TV time is exercise time
It wouldn’t be a HOLIDAY without some TV time – so go on, enjoy a MOVIE with the kids! And while you’re at it, why not throw in a floor exercise or two? The best EASY exercises for your thighs and bottom are FLOOR-BASED, and this one, from our FitMama app, really hits the spot…
3. Outdoors with the kids
Whether you’re visiting the playground, park or town, try to walk there if you can. And if you’re in a car-free space, you can play hide and seek or chasing games on the way! There are so many benefits to this simple, FREE exercise – happy children and happy you (it’s those feel-good hormones again!), lots of FRESH AIR and great exercise for your legs.
And while you’re at the playground, do some squats (we hold on to the back of a bench) – see our Rear in Gear exercise below. Or if you’re embarrassed, lift up and down on tiptoes – NOBODY will notice that!
4. Family-friendly sports
Cycling, skating, tennis, football – they’re all SPORTS that you can do with your kids. And if you’ve no inclination, or a little one to look after, then exercise while you wait for your CHILDREN. Find a PLACE to do a mini-exercise – and if you’ve a tiny in tow, you and your little one can enjoy a QUICK power walk with the pushchair!
5. Tidy-cise!
If you’re spending more time TIDYING up after the nippers (and who isn’t?!) then you might as well make the most of it. Every time you pick something off the floor, SQUAT deeply to tone your buttocks. Or hold a convenient table if you need some BALANCE. Either way, the results are amazing!
6. Garden workout
If you have a garden, you can keep your kids BUSY and workout your LEGS at the same time. Result! When you bend to your work, try our Lovely Legs Exercise on our FitMama App– but make sure you do them safely and CORRECTLY by checking the Right and Wrong section of each exercise.
7. Let’s play paparazzi!
It’s a SAFE bet that as soon as you find a quiet place in the house to do your favourite FITNESS ROUTINE, your kids will be there in a nanosecond. But don’t despair – keep them entertained by encouraging them to take PHOTOS of you on your phone. They’ll love the chance to take pictures and tell you if you’re exercising right. Just make sure they can’t access your Share button…
8. Your own Olympics
Children love competition. So why not set them some little sporting CHALLENGES, such as how many times they can hop on one leg in a minute? Race to the PLAYGROUND swings and back? Do bunny hops round the room? You could even JOIN them for a little workout of your own.
9. Use those apps
Maybe you have those Wii or Kinect apps at home? If so, play some of those GAMES with the kids. You’ll be amazed how many calories ‘tennis’ or ‘skiing’ games BURN, while you share the joy of PLAYING with your children.
10. Just dance
If you don’t use APPS or games consoles at home then just dance! Music and dancing is a great way to lift everyone’s MOOD, especially if it’s raining, and you could shake and RATTLE your own ‘musical instruments’ (rice in a plastic bottle, ankle bells etc) for even more fun!
So it IS possible to keep on exercising while the children are at HOME – and you can ALL have FUN while you’re doing it!
