Q. What makes the app suitable Just for Mums?

A. We make supportive mobile apps to help mums enjoy their new lives. Specifically with FitMama, our exercises are adapted by Fitness and Yoga experts to ensure the exercises are safe and appropriate for your body post pregnancy. For example, your upper body will be particularly tender after having a baby so the exercises are adapted for a Mum who may be breastfeeding to consider the more delicate areas of a mothers body. The app tells you how to exercise correctly and the visual and audio prompts along with the option to select the pace you work at, are ideal for a busy mum who won’t necessarily have time to go to the gym.

Q. I’m not a New Mum can I still use the app?

A. Of Course! We have many users some who have just had a baby, some with toddlers, some with teenagers and even some who are not yet mothers, but perhaps haven’t exercised for some time. Because the app allows you to select your body area to work on, and the audio & visual exercises can be paused, it tracks your progress automatically and gives you right and wrong instructions, it really does make this an app ideal for anyone who wants to fit a 5 or 10 minute workout into their day!

Q: How soon after giving birth can I start an exercise programme and safely?

A: Wait until after your postnatal check at 6 to 8 weeks after you gave birth (10 weeks after a C-section) to start an exercise programme – it’s a good idea to mention at your check that you’re planning to start exercising. Please remember – get checked out by your doctor before starting any exercise programme.

Q: When should I start doing pelvic floor exercises?

A. You should start doing your pelvic floor exercises (which you’ll be given by your midwife) as soon as you feel ready. These are essential to prevent leaking pee (stress incontinence) after birth (Boyle et al 2012). You need to strengthen these before you start an exercise programme, or you may leak during exercise (Junginger et al 2010) – if this happens, don’t resume your exercise programme until you’ve spent time strengthening your pelvic floor muscles.

Q: When can I start walking for exercise?

A. Walking is a great way of building up your strength and stamina, and you can start as soon as you feel up to it (seek your doctor’s advice if you’ve had a C-section or complications of any kind). Taking you baby out for walks in the pushchair is great for a change of scene and will help lift your mood. You can take longer walks as you get stronger, but don’t overdo it and rest when you need to.

Q: What sort of exercise should I avoid?

A. Don’t swim until you’ve had your postnatal check and have had seven days without bleeding. You shouldn’t do sit-ups or aerobic exercise, such as aerobics, jumping or running, for at least 6 months. This will allow your pelvic floor muscles to recover and make sure your joints are not unduly affected by the pregnancy hormone Relaxin, which causes ligaments to soften and stretch. And don’t stretch too far – the effects of Relaxin may allow you to stretch further than normal and you could damage your joints.

Q: Is exercise OK for breastfeeding women?

A. Yes, exercise doesn’t affect the production of breast milk, though some studies show that high-intensity exercise results in lactic acid collecting in breast milk, producing a sour taste that babies don’t like. So stick to moderate intensity exercise and drink plenty of fluids during and after exercise. Make sure you wear a well-fitting, supportive sports bra to minimise discomfort.   Some exercises may cause milk flow so use breast pads and try to empty your breasts before exercise.

Q: Do I need any special equipment for the FitMama workouts?

A. No, our exercises are done with everyday items like cans and towels. However, do make sure you have a well-fitting pair of trainers. Your feet may have changed shape during pregnancy and your ligaments will be more relaxed due to the birth hormone Relaxing – so it’s vital that your ankles are well supported.

Q. I’m so busy can I do it anywhere, anytime?

A: Yes. Our app is made for busy mums on the go – select your 5 or 10 minute workout – ideal for when you have a spare 5 minutes. You can even do one whilst running the bath or boiling the kettle!

Q. How much does FitMama cost?

  1. The App is FREE to download. You select the body area you wish to work on – Upper, Middle and Lower. If you select Lower we offer you the opportunity to subscribe for 3 or 6 months to have access to ALL exercises, REGULAR extras and FITNESS tips

Q. I cannot access the lower part of the exercises

A: This will be because you need to subscribe. The upper and middle parts of the body are free but the lower areas contain a vast amount of exercises only available to those who have subscribed. You can subscribe with the option of 3 months and 6 months very easily, just select the ‘Info’ Screen and click subscribe now!

A. Yoga is a wellbeing practice that is gaining popularity all over the World due to its HEALTH and PSYCHOLOGICAL benefits.

Yoga practice is ideal for the POSTNATAL BODY. Most studies on the effect of yoga suggest yoga is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity, to bring balance and calmness to the mind, help release STRESS and relieve PAIN.

Yoga POSTURES teach us to open the chest and shoulders as these areas can slowly collapse inward from nursing and carrying a BABY around. Therefore, yoga helps to relieve the pain in the NECK & SHOULDERS as well as the LOWER BACK.

Yoga practice educates and helps us to acquire good EMOTIONAL and PHYSICAL rest as well as boost our energy and POSITIVE SPIRIT.
